Revisiting Older Works, or ‘What Was I Thinking?’

Earlier this year, an article about my four Quilt National quilts appeared here  http://quiltnationalartists.com/journey-landscape-alison-schwabe/  and it seemed a good place to start a broader study for a powerpoint presentation I was asked to give to a  meeting of Ozquilt in Perth WA last month  (May 2014).  It was suggested I might talk on inspirations, themes and my processes.  Naturally, revisiting mixed media work and quilt making done over 35+ years led to  the rediscovery of many works I’d pushed to the back of my memory – some for very good reasons indeed!  Here’s a pair of works made 7 years apart on the theme of water as a major force of nature shaping landscape:

Still Waters #2,  1993.   That year we were living in the USA, and early summer  floods occurred all down the mighty Mississippi River valley, leaving thousands of people flooded out, destroying many homes and much infrastructure.  There were many dramatic and harrowing stories in the media, all of which prompted this piece.  Now, the ‘What Was I Thinking?’ bit may be obvious to you, but didn’t occur to me at the time: floodwaters, whether seeping or pouring over a tiled floor are not clear and sparkly!  I still have this piece, and now put it in the category of ‘not a great one’ but a work I had to make, nevertheless.

 

 

Flood,  2000  125cm x 110cm    This flood piece got the swirling muddy waters right – because by this time I was more focused the powerful force of water in/on landscape.  I don’t think this is an especially wonderful a quilt, either, and hardly surprises me it is still ‘In Artist’s Collection’   Again, it had to be made, probably so I could move on.  The murky green main fabric is quilted with freehand water current lines, though they’re hard to see in the clear nylon thread I used in the twin top stitch needle.  Although I have revealed something about this work, it still amazes me that I actually made this one – another ‘What Was I thinking?’ piece.

 

 

It Can Take A While For An Idea …

For some years  I’ve had on my pin board a little cutting of a full and detail view of a tapestry weaving by Scottish textile artist Sara Brennan   The image was for an ad in a magazine for a solo show at The Scottish Gallery Edinburgh, 2006.

Lines are important to me, as in ‘lines=seams’.  The importance of line in Sara Brennan’s landscape inspired work is because of  “the meetings (that) occur around a horizon”   Who knows why didn’t I research her work when I first found this picture, but I never took the little pic down, because it felt important for me to leave it there.    This morning, while doing something totally different I suddenly realized if I fused some sheer fabric over a seam it could have a slightly similar effect, with a lot of potential – and so I put together this little aide memoire of a sewn seam with sheer overlay, with the snippet from the pin board on the cream part of the photo.   How interesting that it has taken me all this time of occasionally glancing at that little pic to finally have a little light bulb switch on!.

I don’t know the name of the piece above, or the one below.  When searching around for writing on her work I found very little, really, which is a bit disappointing.  But at least you can see more images of this beautiful, evocative work here.

Texture On The Beach

This morning as I was hunting for something totally different, I came across this pattern in the ‘Sand Patterns’ file I hadn’t looked at for a while, and wondered how on earth I could have forgotten about this stunning pic?  It’s not the Namib Desert from the air or something like that – it’s in the wet sand not far above the low tide line.  I normally take care to avoid including shoe prints in my pics of sand patterns, but they do provide a perspective, and in this case there is a faint shoeprint just above the LLH corner of the pic.   When I took it a couple of months back, I didn’t check to see which little creatures made those little lumps at the ends of those lines -and I’m just presuming either tiny molluscs or bivalves, but they may be little crabs, though I rarely see any crabs at all on the beach I usually go to.

Sandlace – Free Form Lace Continued

Some sample making continues for some ‘Sandlace’ works,  inspired by pics such as this one above.

  • Something I’ll do more is place one of the ‘lacey’ sections over some of my own freeform piecing/patchwork.
  • Another possibility is ditto over some much more muted fabrics,  closer to each other in colour and intensity.
  • Also to be explored are some texture printed backgrounds ….

  •  I very much like raw edges, so this  is being explored, too.

 

 

Patterns Of Holes – Current Exploration

These couple of beach photos show why I find patterns on the sand inspiring – although I have only just connected them to my current ‘holes’ focus.  They are of sand ripples and drainage lines of course; but to each photo I have added some sketch lines to highlight the potential of such patterns as ‘holes’, which to me mean ‘lace’ of a freeform kind.

In this first one,  I sketched in some lines to show how I see irregularly edged fabric with cut holes, and stitch on patterns suggested by the drainage lines, and knotty things of some kind like the little lumpy bits on the sand.

And in the second, I have quickly sketched around shapes to show you why I am thinking ‘free form lace ‘ of a kind.

And, if I made some holes with a crochet hook or knitting needles,  both those would provide additional textures …hmm, possibilities.

I’ve already hacked various sized and shaped holes into a variety of fabrics this morning, and now they and some of the cutout bits (these in a mesh bag) are all  swirling around in the long wash cycle.  After a spell in the dryer I hope some interestingly frayed and inspiring pieces of fabric will take me to another step in what I have in mind.
