{"id":589,"date":"2010-02-28T15:39:04","date_gmt":"2010-02-28T20:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=589"},"modified":"2010-02-28T15:39:04","modified_gmt":"2010-02-28T20:39:04","slug":"exciting-paper-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=589","title":{"rendered":"Exciting Paper Works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being Launceston (Tasmania) born and bred,\u00a0I love\u00a0to go back from time to time to visit the remaining family there.\u00a0 I always\u00a0enjoy this beautiful city\u00a0founded in 1806, with buildings dating from 1824 still in use today.\u00a0 From\u00a0the\u00a0classical Georgian period, \u00a0the city is\u00a0often favourably compared to Bath UK.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I certainly didn&#8217;t really appreciate\u00a0its beauty\u00a0when I was growing up &#8230;\u00a0and opted out of history classes just as soon as I could to escape a highly boring teacher that I would have done well to heed more.<\/p>\n<p>One of the must-do things is always to visit the Tasmanian\u00a0Design Centre\u00a0at the corner of Tamar and Brisbane Streets, tucked into a corner of the City Park.\u00a0 There are always interesting exhibitions of well designed and\u00a0 made Tasmanian fine craft, often featuring wood\u00a0and ceramics, but metal and jewellery making, textiles, paper and other fibres get a good look in, too.\u00a0 The building began life as a church, but for many years now has housed the centre, and each time the building is renovated (tastefully) more vestiges of the original function disappear from view.<\/p>\n<p>On a visit late in late\u00a0July last year, I found a stunning exhibition of paper forms by\u00a0prominent Tasmanian paper maker <a class=\"wp-oembed\" title=\"Joanna Gair\" href=\"http:\/\/designcentre.com.au\/exhibitions.php?exhibition_id=53\" target=\"_self\">Joanna Gair<\/a>, and was hopeful of writing a\u00a0post that might have\u00a0been published\u00a0before the show ended, but alas, permission from the centre to publish a couple of photos I took was so long forthcoming that the time for that passed.\u00a0 So of course in the intervening months I seem to have lost the notes\u00a0I&#8217;m sure I did make\u00a0of exactly which two pieces these lovely paper sculptures are;
