{"id":4207,"date":"2017-12-13T08:45:10","date_gmt":"2017-12-13T13:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=4207"},"modified":"2017-12-13T08:45:10","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T13:45:10","slug":"considering-series-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=4207","title":{"rendered":"Considering Series Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In response to yet another question on working in a series, on which I have written<span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=2770\">before<\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0 I wrote a\u00a0 few comments on the Quiltart list this week, including:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;I think it is important to write about each work. I don&#8217;t mean how you made it &#8211; those technical details aren&#8217;t the important part of a series. I mean writing your thoughts, ideas, inspirations, concerns, fears maybe &#8211; anything about your work, put onto paper, or into a digital visual or artist&#8217;s diary of some kind.\u00a0 This writing, in whatever form, is not for publication but for yourself; the act of thinking about why you are doing what you are doing is part of the series process.\u00a0 And when a meaningful artist statement is required, you have already done the groundwork!\u00a0I&#8217;ve occasionally had what I felt at the time were one-offs, and yet with some, hindsight, there are really only two that don&#8217;t fit in one of my series.\u00a0 But, even as I wrote that sentence, it occurred to me that those two almost forgotten works, made almost 20 years apart, have something strong in common&#8230; we exercise skill navigating the swings and roundabouts, but there&#8217;s always temptation, the quirky hand of fate, the wheel of fortune, and so on &#8211; all these things are alluded to in the images on the quilt, which itself is a patchwork background of brights and darks signifying highs and lows.\u00a0 In many ways this\u00a0 contains the germ of the much later and still current <em>&#8216;Ebb and Flow&#8217; I just don&#8217;t remember &#8211; and I didn&#8217;t write much about it at the time, perhaps I didn&#8217;t think it was important enough, I&#8217;m not sure.\u00a0 But I can tell you that in the preceding few months or weeks I had seen <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a fabulous exhibition of the ceramics of very important Uruguayan artist<\/span>\u00a0 <a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Gurvich\">Jose Gurvich<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">some of whose works can be seen today in a dedicated<\/span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.museogurvich.org\/museo\/exposiciones\/coleccion-permanente\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">museum<\/span><\/a> in the old city on Plaza Matriz. I love his<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/yaq66wf8\"> <span style=\"color: #993300;\">work<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0which is literally everywhere here.\u00a0 Note the Life theme, and the pictographic symbols on the leaves &#8211; I was definitely on that same hand of fate\/role of chance track 18 years later.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">\n<p dir=\"auto\">This morning I watched an interesting profile of Egyptian jewellery designer <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/y8lu6unh\">Azza Fahmy<\/a><\/span>\u00a0whose beautiful dramatic modern jewellery references her nationality and cultural history &#8211; she commented that while designing her Pharaonic collection over 10 years she was constantly combing through museums and archeological sites all around Egypt re-familiarising herself with all elements of ancient Egyptian decorative design that she was using as inspiration.\u00a0 It can take much time and thought to build a series!<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">I think it&#8217;s time to have a palm reading.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In response to yet another question on working in a series, on which I have written\u00a0before,\u00a0 I wrote a\u00a0 few comments on the Quiltart list this week, including:\u00a0 &#8220;I think it is important to write about each work.
