\"Sunburnt<\/a><\/p>\n

“Sunburnt Textures”<\/em><\/span> is a title piece from my first solo exhibition 1987, shortly after which my textile art\u00a0came under the influence of quilt making.\u00a0\u00a0 The design area is about 30cm x 45cm, of paint+stitch+found objects on white canvas,\u00a0mounted on a stretcher bar.<\/p>\n

In march this year\u00a0I worked on a power point presentation\u00a0about my textile\u00a0art\u00a0to use at two guest speaking events in Australia in May.\u00a0 I found myself carefully considering this and other older works with fresh eyes after many years.\u00a0The very old slide was a bit cleaned up around the irregular edges with PS to\u00a0use as a background to\u00a0the title\u00a0“A Journey Through Landscape”<\/p>\n

Also at that time I\u00a0submitted an entry proposal for the\u00a0 “Golden Textures” exhibition\u00a02015,\u00a0and included this sketch below.\u00a0 The entry\u00a0was accepted.\u00a0 I planned to carry it out in gold stitchery on a darkish fabric, approx 1.3mh x 1mw, and brave or mad I knew it\u00a0would take a long time.<\/p>\n

Also in late April, I submitted entries for the\u00a0Australia Wide 4\u00a0E<\/strong><\/span>xhibition<\/strong><\/span><\/em>\u00a0opening Adelaide October this\u00a0year –\u00a0and this is a detail of one of the two I had chosen:<\/p>\n

At 40cm square, and clearly on the same theme, \u00a0it became\u00a0a sort of test piece for the Golden Textures\u00a0entry.\u00a0(this detail is about\u00a0 10cm sq).\u00a0\u00a0 I’ve always loved hand stitch but\u00a0the trees in this one are free machine embroidery. Well, the gold thread worked OK as you can see, but for a\u00a01.3m x 1m piece it would take me many months of stitching as the metallic thread fairly quickly shredded, meaning needles had to be changed often.\u00a0 I realized that on\u00a0 that larger scale with the time I had available, it was not going to be possible,\u00a0and so I changed my Golden Textures proposal, so that now,\u00a0over 3\/4 finished\u00a0it is\u00a0black stitch on a background of a less intense ochre-red\/brown silk which glows beautifully….sometimes second thoughts are better<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n
