Earlier this year, an article about my four Quilt National quilts appeared here\u00a0 http:\/\/quiltnationalartists.com\/journey-landscape-alison-schwabe\/<\/a>\u00a0 and it seemed a good place to start\u00a0a broader study for a powerpoint presentation I was asked to give to a\u00a0 meeting of\u00a0Ozquilt in Perth WA last month\u00a0 (May 2014).\u00a0 It was suggested I might\u00a0talk on inspirations, themes and my processes.\u00a0 Naturally, revisiting\u00a0mixed media work and quilt\u00a0making done over 35+ years\u00a0led to\u00a0 the rediscovery of many works I’d pushed to the back of my memory – some for very good reasons indeed!\u00a0 Here’s a pair of works made 7 years apart on the theme of water\u00a0as a\u00a0major force of nature shaping landscape:<\/p>\n

\"floodwaters<\/a><\/p>\n

Still Waters #2, \u00a01993.<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 That year we were living in the USA, and\u00a0early summer \u00a0floods\u00a0occurred all down the mighty Mississippi River valley, leaving thousands of people flooded out, destroying many homes and much infrastructure.\u00a0 There were many dramatic and harrowing stories in the media,\u00a0all of which\u00a0prompted this piece.\u00a0 Now, the ‘What Was I Thinking?’ bit may be obvious to you, but didn’t occur to me at the time: floodwaters, whether seeping or pouring over a tiled floor are not<\/em> clear and sparkly!\u00a0 I<\/em><\/span> still have this piece, and now put it in the category of ‘not a great one’ but a work I had to make, nevertheless<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Flood,\u00a0 2000\u00a0 125cm x 110cm\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 This flood piece got the swirling muddy waters right – because by this time I was more focused the powerful force of water in\/on landscape.\u00a0 I don’t think\u00a0this is an\u00a0especially wonderful a quilt, either, and hardly surprises me it is still ‘In Artist’s Collection’\u00a0\u00a0 Again, it had to be made,<\/em><\/span> probably so I could move on.\u00a0 The murky green main fabric is quilted with freehand water current lines, though they’re hard to see in the clear nylon thread I used in the twin top stitch needle.\u00a0 Although I have revealed something about this work, it still amazes me\u00a0that I actually made this\u00a0one\u00a0– another ‘What Was I thinking?’ piece.<\/span><\/p>\n
