{"id":2674,"date":"2014-03-04T11:18:23","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T16:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=2674"},"modified":"2014-03-04T11:18:23","modified_gmt":"2014-03-04T16:18:23","slug":"the-ghiordes-knot-stitch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=2674","title":{"rendered":"The Ghiordes Knot Stitch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was digging around looking for the name of and\u00a0 basic working instruction for a loopy stitch I\u00a0used in the &#8217;80&#8217;s but never since.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen it or something like it so effectively used in <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/debbielyddon.wordpress.com\/my-work-3\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Debbie Lydon&#8217;s <\/span><\/a><\/span>works, and some other artists&#8217; works.\u00a0 Despite fiddling with a needle and thread I&#8217;d forgotten how I did it, and looked around.\u00a0 First, the meagre offerings on my bookcase; I have far more comprehensive books in my collection in Australia,\u00a0 and now there is so much online, but I take these along to one of the workshops I teach.\u00a0 They&#8217;re well travelled and had a lot of use since I bought them in the late 70&#8217;s.\u00a0 But the stitch wasn&#8217;t there.\u00a0 However, in the front of each one I found this wonderful\u00a0introductory quote:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\"><em>&#8220;Free Style Embroidery &#8211; The most popular type of embroidery is Free Style Embroidery. i.e., embroideries which are worked over a traced of hot-iron transfer design of from a stamped linen.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/span>Goodness &#8211; check out these <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a title=\"ghiordes knot images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ghiordes+knot+stitch&amp;rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-SearchBox&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=V-0VU8ChCsi1kQeep4HoAw&amp;ved=0CFkQsAQ&amp;biw=1152&amp;bih=558\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">images<\/span><\/a><\/span> for a feast of potential including easy to follow step by step instruction. \u00a0Images include\u00a0a very few\u00a0from free spirits, but mostly carefully controlled execution&#8230; as in this next link,\u00a0containing perhaps the clearest basic step-by-step\u00a0instruction in an article on\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.needlepoint.org\/StitchOfTheMonth\/2006\/aug.php\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">American\u00a0 Needlepoint Guild&#8217;s Stitch of The Month<\/span><\/a> back in August 2006.\u00a0 Naturally, for a guild,\u00a0 it&#8217;s very precise and correct, and\u00a0from the point of doing it on canvas and eventually cutting the loops once they&#8217;re all in place&#8230;. the equivalent to the &#8216;free style embroidery&#8217; on linen !<\/p>\n<p>I did masses of uncut loops, aka ghiordes knots apparently,\u00a0c. 1986 in a piece for an exhibition of my creative embroidery.\u00a0 Of\u00a0course, I don&#8217;t have an image within reach,\u00a0 and indeed I&#8217;m wondering if I do have an image anywhere\u00a0&#8211;
