and I&#8217;m always happy to give my opinion on something that interests me.\u00a0 I suppose you could say that the greatest of all surveys is a national election that either brings a change in government or avoids it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>In just the last couple of weeks,\u00a0\u00a0I responded to\u00a0interesting surveys in\u00a0the general area\u00a0of textile and fibre art\u00a0education, principally art quilting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a title=\"Lisa on over view classes for beginner art quilts?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lisacall.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Lisa Call<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0asked around fellow SAQA members to see if\u00a0any one knew of\u00a0classes on basic techniques of what you can do with fabric\u00a0for\u00a0aspiring art quilters, saying she was looking for\u00a0&#8220;an\u00a0overview\/survey type course for art quilts&#8230;.\u00a0a variety surface design techniques\u00a0&#8230; collage, and a bit of\u00a0piecing &#8230;&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0ending with asking for\u00a0suggestions on how one might learn such things, and\u00a0clearly favouring online learning.\u00a0 I felt she was looking not for someone to\u00a0teach &#8216;it all&#8217; for I think the field is too vast to wrap one&#8217;s mind around.\u00a0 Her student will need guidance, help in recognizing what technique has been used in a particular work she likes, and then finding a good online location to learn the basics of that technique, after which its all up to her to run with it, or not.<\/p>\n<p>(2) Fellow SAQA member <a title=\"What Do You Want From Me?\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.roxanelessa.com\/want\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Roxanne Lessa<\/span><\/a>\u00a0asked us and her blog readers to let her know what they would like to learn from her, citing an extensive list of\u00a0 things she&#8217;s be interested in teaching or tutoring on.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m not looking for a course or a mentor just now, so just moved on.\u00a0 From this list, though, you need\u00a0to have some idea of what you wanted to learn before you even contacted her, perhaps\u00a0how she did something in one of her works pictured on her website.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0 Teacher and art quilt maker <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.denacrain.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Dena C<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">rain<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> recently surveyed quilt artists seeing their comments on how art quilters rank the value of learning the same course material\u00a0through\u00a0 (1) attending workshops\/courses taught in real time\u00a0\u00a0 (2) \u00a0classes taken online\u00a0 (3)\u00a0 learning through a lesson in a\u00a0book or periodical\u00a0 (4)\u00a0 ditto via a digital or eBook format.\u00a0 Of course, the costs of accessing each one could never be exactly equal, but for the survey we were asked to assume they were,\u00a0and rank our choices\u00a0with any\u00a0comments\/reasons for them.\u00a0 She summarized her findings\u00a0in\u00a0today&#8217;s very\u00a0interesting blog post <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a title=\"Dena Crain's survey on Education in the future for P&amp;Q\" href=\"http:\/\/www.denacrain.com\/blog\/the-future-of-education-for-patchwork-quilters\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">The Future of Education for Patchwork Quilters<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #333333;\">She is an American living in Kenya &#8211; and in her remote location\u00a0faces varying kinds of location from what US, UK, European, many Australian, New Zealand, Japanese and other Asian quilt makers take for granted &#8211; relatively easy access to real time classes, easy access to vendors of supplies or mail order that works beautifully, and so on.\u00a0 Knowing a lot about Dena and her geographic perspective, and seeing similarities to my own situation,\u00a0of course I had views on this and did not hesitate to respond !<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m certain\u00a0workshops and classes that\u00a0you physically attend will always will always rank high for learning because of the huge potential\u00a0offered by real\u00a0face time\u00a0between all students and teacher involved, technology is changing fast to make recorded and live online demonstrations, classes, courses, seminars,\u00a0 etc. \u00a0all feasible and highly worthwhile,\u00a0with different\u00a0advantages to suit the individual.\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u00a0The offerings in fabric and thread alone are massive,\u00a0and include\u00a0some extremely good on almost every technique you can think of,<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 but\u00a0also plenty of\u00a0mediocre ones;\u00a0with costs ranging from free to rather expensive.\u00a0\u00a0 How fortunate are today&#8217;s craftsmen and artists to be able to choose to\u00a0learn\u00a0wherever we look from the comfort of our own homes.\u00a0\u00a0And on that note, even though I don&#8217;t plan to leave the house on this rather wet day, it&#8217;s time I showered and dressed\u00a0before spending time in the studio.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been doing some samples and am keen to start pursuing a couple on a larger scale &#8211; but to get started there, &#8220;I\u00a0like to\u00a0be clean and tasteful&#8221; as my fav.
