{"id":2308,"date":"2013-08-18T13:47:59","date_gmt":"2013-08-18T18:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=2308"},"modified":"2013-08-18T13:47:59","modified_gmt":"2013-08-18T18:47:59","slug":"wavy-edges-of-wall-quilts-additional","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=2308","title":{"rendered":"Wavy Edges of Wall Quilts &#8211; Additional"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve realized that there was another suggestion I could have made in the previous post on this issue,\u00a0but didn&#8217;t think of it\u00a0until just a short while ago:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?attachment_id=2309\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2309\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"2309\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?attachment_id=2309\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/wavy-quilts-extra-horizontal-slats.jpg?fit=450%2C299&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"450,299\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Picasa&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1376848196&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"wavy quilts &amp;#8211; extra horizontal slats\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/wavy-quilts-extra-horizontal-slats.jpg?fit=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/wavy-quilts-extra-horizontal-slats.jpg?fit=450%2C299&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2309\" alt=\"wavy quilts - extra horizontal slats\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/wavy-quilts-extra-horizontal-slats.jpg?resize=450%2C299&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/wavy-quilts-extra-horizontal-slats.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/wavy-quilts-extra-horizontal-slats.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">It struck me that although I have never had to do this, it would be an easy thing to place a few extra horizontal sleeves on the back of a quilt,<\/span><\/em>\u00a0from just inside the binding edge on each side, and\u00a0into these slide fine,\u00a0light rods of either acrylic, wood or even\u00a0very fine\u00a0metal, to help curb that tendency to curl forward.\u00a0\u00a0 The exact same principle as those little stays you can find in some men&#8217;s shirt collars.\u00a0 Now, how close should the\u00a0 sleeves\u00a0be?\u00a0 I have\u00a0no idea,\u00a0and facing this problem\u00a0I&#8217;d have to wing it myself\u00a0!!\u00a0 Initially, I&#8217;d think about 8&#8243; or 9&#8243; apart would do it,\u00a0but it might depend on the weights of the fabrics, and\u00a0if the problem didn&#8217;t seem entirely solved, I&#8217;d be prepared to move them a bit closer and add another one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>I&#8217;m sure that\u00a0the wavy edges I saw are solely due to the pressures of heavy machining producing slippage and distortions\u00a0between the layers of the quilt.\u00a0<\/em><\/span> I don&#8217;t believe in the process of blocking quilts as a permanent fix for bubbling and distortions that\u00a0do arise with large variations of quilting density from one part of a quilt to another.\u00a0 Believe me, the fine gathering line will work wonders in a bumpy area surrounded by &#8216;flat&#8217; quilted areas.\u00a0 And if one of those bumpy areas goes out to the edge somewhere, the gathering and re-applying that bit of binding will work, too &#8211; you might have an 1\/2&#8243; or 1&#8243; or so of binding spare to remove.\u00a0Of course these little processes are fiddly, but they worth doing; they do work, and can make all the difference to your final result, so that in addition to being a marvelous assembly of colour and design it\u00a0appears\u00a0well and professionally executed.\u00a0 Remember, once a\u00a0quilt\u00a0leaves the maker&#8217;s control it\u00a0should be flat, and stay stable in that condition,\u00a0whatever the atmospheric conditions in\u00a0its new home.<\/p>\n<p>Finally,\u00a0I must say that every exhibition I saw was carefully presented, the pieces hung level, and were attractively and sympathetically grouped for a good overall impression.
