Traditionally, quiltmakers have shared knowledge, advice and tips generously, but when\u00a0a tutorial purports to teach how easy it is to &#8216;make an art quilt&#8217; I feel a bit sad for someone who will view it, and then think they, too, can so easily be making an\u00a0&#8216;art quilt&#8217; just like it without spending time on matters of design and colour theory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Dropping a few modern art names into\u00a0a blog\u00a0post about one&#8217;s latest completed project\u00a0doesn&#8217;t elevate the quality of the art, either,<\/em><\/span> and one of my very pet peeves is those who title their works to include well known names,\u00a0and\/or sprinkle\u00a0their artist statements\u00a0with references of influences by popular favourites\u00a0such as\u00a0Klimt, Mondrian, Picasso, Rothko, Matisse <em>et al<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; in sort of self-glorifying critique mode, and\u00a0this kind of thing is not confined to quilt makers, either.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Gees Bend Quilters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/geesbend.html?c=y&amp;page=3#\" target=\"_blank\">The Gees Bend Quilters<\/a> are very often referenced by modern quiltmakers once they\u00a0adopt the improvisational style of piecing that characterises these and other historic Afro American textiles and similar\u00a0textiles from other countries; and what\u00a0people\u00a0often mean by it is that\u00a0they&#8217;re now using improvisational cutting and piecing styles\u00a0instead of putting together precise geometric patterns.\u00a0 I&#8217;m\u00a0totally in love with\u00a0this very free\u00a0way of working, and have been piecing improvisationally\/freehand\/template-free since the early &#8217;90&#8217;s,\u00a0 but I would never dream of\u00a0describing my work as anything \u00a0&#8216;like Gees Bend quilts&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\"><em>It bothers me every time I come across it.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pet peeve rant coming up today !
