Pick me!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0As I\u00a0\u00a0have an emotional attachment to dots, glitter and black, it was a shoe in.\u00a0\u00a0Whenever I\u00a0begin a new work, I get potentially relevant fabrics out, spread them on a table and the floor if necessary &#8211; and\u00a0once I&#8217;ve selected what to use, \u00a0put most of them away again, and then turn to my scrap bag to augment the range.\u00a0 I and other quilters really do call this process &#8216;auditioning&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0 If I think there still must be something more, something special I&#8217;ve overlooked, I dig really, really deep\u00a0down to the back of\u00a0my fabric stash, which is how I came across this one I&#8217;d forgotten.\u00a0 I still can&#8217;t quite believe it lurked in the background for a couple of years, but it must have.<\/p>\n<p>Quite often people say to me &#8211; &#8220;Where do you buy your fabrics?&#8221; and the short answer is &#8220;Anywhere and Everywhere&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 I always try to have a little cash on me or space on a card to be able to buy something I love when I come across it.\u00a0 I know when I\u00a0return it will\u00a0have gone.<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>\u00a0 I recently posted\u00a0<\/em> <\/span><a title=\"Wonderful Fabric Find\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=1471\" target=\"_blank\">2012\/13\/14<\/a> and elsewhere I can&#8217;t find right now !!! <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">on\u00a0surprising fabrics I&#8217;ve discovered\u00a0in Montevideo&#8217;s\u00a0sunday markets<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 When down there\u00a0I always check through the\u00a0bolts and rolls on\u00a0any fabric vendor&#8217;s tables\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0I just never know what\u00a0will be\u00a0mixed\u00a0in\u00a0with the majority of stuff that doesn&#8217;t especially interest me.\u00a0\u00a0True love determines whether or not I\u00a0buy any fabric\u00a0 and experience has shown\u00a0that if I\u00a0love it I will use it &#8211;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\">no fabric\u00a0being too\u00a0precious to cut into<\/span><\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 But, it&#8217;s possible a particular fabric may lurk in my cupboard\u00a0for several years until just the right moment.<\/p>\n<p>If you have looked at my work\u00a0 in the Colour Memory and Ebb&amp;Flow galleries, you&#8217;ll know my contemporary freehand patchwork art quilts have always been composed of many\u00a0fabrics in small amounts.\u00a0 I always save small pieces from previous projects, and often dive into\u00a0my\u00a0scrap bags for tiny amounts of many different scraps to use in a quilt. \u00a0I\u00a0happily\u00a0team unusual fabrics and\u00a0imho it works\u00a0because <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>every\u00a0fabric I use I initially bought for\u00a0<\/em><em>love<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0Recent works can\u00a0contain fabrics spanning over 25 years &#8211; let the textile historian experts make what they will with that!<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Here are\u00a0my\u00a0personal \u00a0&#8216;rules&#8217; that determine how I buy new fabric<\/span><\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If it appeals, I buy a 1\/8 &#8211; 1\/4 \u00a0metre\/yard<\/li>\n<li>if I really like it I buy 1\/2 \u00a0m\/yd.<\/li>\n<li>If it&#8217;s something special to me I buy 1 &#8211; 3 m\/yds.<\/li>\n<li>If I am quite over-the-top\u00a0delirious at finding\u00a0it, I&#8217;ll probably make an offer for whatever&#8217;s left on the bolt!\u00a0\u00a0And the last time I did this, there\u00a0was 19m @ US$2.50\/m, of the other fabric\u00a0shown above &#8211; a shiny black cotton chintz that is marvellous to work with &#8211; which is\u00a0just as well, since\u00a0there&#8217;s about\u00a014m left &#8230;..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I love black, ecru\/cream and\u00a0other neutrals especially\u00a0greys,\u00a0and I adored\u00a0a wonderful putty colour I&#8217;ve completely used up\u00a0and\u00a0have never seen again &#8211; yet.\u00a0 But the wonderful thing about fabric is there&#8217;s always more.\u00a0 So, running out of\u00a0one is no disaster to me.\u00a0\u00a0 In addition to neutral plains, I use some hand dyed fabrics (not done by me) which have slight textures, and some commercial prints I call hand-dye-look-alikes; and I love certain prints\u00a0particularly dots, spots, stripes, interesting fine textures and\u00a0tiny geometrics.\u00a0 \u00a0Yes, I you could say I have great enthusiasm for fabrics &#8211; but this enthusiasm is very selective &#8211; they must be ones I love.\u00a0\u00a0I never buy\u00a0whole collections of new fabric releases, and I will never be one of those,\u00a0including some\u00a0great artists in the medium whose work I admire totally,\u00a0who have\u00a0hundreds of colours and\/or prints at their fingertips.\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> Geography now plays some part in this but<\/span><\/em> I have always had\u00a0these buying &#8216;rules&#8217;, even when I lived somewhere I\u00a0could easiy nip out and search for something particular.\u00a0 Here in Uruguay\u00a0there is nothing like a\u00a0&#8216;quilt shop&#8217;\u00a0selling nice good quality cotton fabrics, nor\u00a0the large fabric stores that many of my peers have\u00a0direct or easy online-access to.\u00a0\u00a0I think\u00a0this has forced me to maintain an open mind on the potential of absolutely anything I come across.\u00a0 <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">And there is no doubt that the whole fabric situation\u00a0in my textile art life has\u00a0influenced how I work.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Naturally, all this is echoed in threads I buy and use. \u00a0For all piecing I use only\u00a0Gutermann&#8217;s Skala, available in\u00a010,000m cones of black, white,\u00a0 cream, light grey\u00a0 and dark grey\u00a0 (there are other colours I don&#8217;t need)\u00a0\u00a0 When I need other\u00a0more traditional sewing machine threads or for hand sewing, my stash is mostly neutrals, black, white and cream.\u00a0\u00a0I sometimes use appropriate black\/white\/neutrals, however a lot of my quilting is in\u00a0metallics of which I have a few in reasonably large quantity on hand.\u00a0\u00a0 Below is a small piece\u00a0typical of the way I love to use metallic &#8211;
