This is\u00a0recent experimentation\u00a0with fusing my signature wandering fabric strips to\u00a0black background.\u00a0(sample size shown c. 6″)<\/p>\n

While in the US recently I bought a brand of fusing \/bonding material I hadn’t used before, partly because the veisoflex I’d been using didn’t seem to be anywhere around where I was.\u00a0 So I bought some Steam a Seam 2., its different, and\u00a0I really like it.\u00a0 I haven’t done a lot of fusing in the past, but I did think it might be a way to go with the new smaller works I am doing.\u00a0 These smaller works I\u00a0posted previously have been sewn, then fused to a backing before being\u00a0 sewn down onto the base fabric.\u00a0\u00a0One thing I thought was that strips of fabric fused down might be quicker than sewing inserted strips.\u00a0 Wrong –\u00a0 really,\u00a0small strip by small strip it is a bit fiddly, or, if you back a piece of each\u00a0fabric you’re going to use,\u00a0even jsut 2″ x 10″, and cut pieces from that, then you have bits left which you need\u00a0to keep using to get the best value\u00a0from your materials, right?\u00a0 And I am pretty nifty with the\u00a0sewn strips.\u00a0 <\/em><\/span>\u00a0So that’s one thing I have to work out.<\/p>\n

And this third pic is a side-by side comparison –\u00a0 sewn on the left, with fused on the right.\u00a0\u00a0 The fused piece\u00a0is a very flat looking surface by comparison.\u00a0 In a bed quilt there would be too much movement of the quilt for it to be a viable technique, it\u00a0wouldn’t last.\u00a0 On the wall though, it would, and for some kind of background it could be just the thing;\u00a0 though, as I say, hardly ‘quicker.’\u00a0 This afternoon I have fused sheer to plain as a substitute for stencilling some sand ripples – light ridges vs dark hollows – its very promising indeed and I have been doing some hand stitch over the top of that, and as quilters would say, ‘\u00a0the hand’ is fine.\u00a0I had thought there might be a stickiness or resistance\u00a0on the needle, but no.\u00a0 Pics of all that when it’s a bit further along.<\/p>\n
