{"id":1071,"date":"2010-09-02T23:37:11","date_gmt":"2010-09-03T04:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=1071"},"modified":"2010-09-02T23:37:11","modified_gmt":"2010-09-03T04:37:11","slug":"naming-a-quilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=1071","title":{"rendered":"Naming A Quilt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; or any other art work for that matter.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, until today, since I know\u00a0I have some way with words,<em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> I had never considered\u00a0&#8216;naming&#8217; much of a problem\u00a0really.\u00a0 I realised too that I have\u00a0always considered naming my art works an actual part of the whole process, from initial design idea\u00a0to last stitch.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>The naming process\u00a0may be a pop-up , the-lightbulb&#8217;s-on kind of moment at anystage; I may make little memos to myself at various times to return later; or I may need to do some serious deliberation at the end, even if I have been vaguely thinking about it a while.\u00a0 \u00a0To do this, I write lists of words or pairs of words, get\u00a0help from Roget&#8217;s Thesaurus of synonyms perhaps,\u00a0 and develop a short list\u00a0of 2-3 titles\u00a0to try\u00a0for size against the finished work.\u00a0 It could take little bursts of activity over hours or several days- sleep on it, etc.\u00a0 If I still can&#8217;t decide I might consult with DH, but by\u00a0one of these means\u00a0I do arrive at the final choice, name it by writing the title on the back of the work, and it&#8217;s done.<\/p>\n<p>What brought these thoughts to mind is\u00a0 that today\u00a0a well known quilt artist, Nancy Cook,\u00a0asked two or three thousand of her art quilting colleagues on two lists for their suggestions for a name\u00a0for her most recent work, which she commented is an entry for Quilt National&#8217;11 (entries close in a week, she is running against the clock here!)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Occasionally people do this, giving us a blog link to\u00a0check the piece out and give feedback.\u00a0\u00a0I just had never seen someone openly looking for a title for a QN entry although probably it has been done often enough &#8211;\u00a0 but usually who would know?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I linked through to the image on\u00a0her blog.\u00a0\u00a0Nancy said this is\u00a0not the exact one she was entering but\u00a0(as many of us know she does work in beautiful series)\u00a0 contains\u00a0important elements of her actual\u00a0entry.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Because of my strong view on this -my readers would expect no less <span style=\"color: #99cc00;\"><strong>;-p<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 on principle\u00a0I didn&#8217;t make any title suggestions,\u00a0but sent her the possible naming approaches\u00a0I\u00a0outlined\u00a0above &#8211; which were probably not new to her, and no doubt people have others.\u00a0\u00a0That QN entry form can cause a bit of panic as we all know.\u00a0 And, most likely, Nancy probably thought of a great name all by herself as soon as she put the call out.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">In my mind anyway, this raised the following issues:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If\u00a0 she were to choose a title suggested by someone in the comment section of her blog, ie this is in a very public way, would it then mean she should include this person&#8217;s name on the entry form as a collaborator?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Should the person who suggested the chosen title\u00a0then\u00a0expect some % of prize money the maker might be awarded ?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I emailed the kernels of this post to Nancy a few hours ago, before even thinking about blogging on this today &#8211; she thanked me for my coments in such a way that\u00a0I\u00a0feel sure she will not take this as any kind of personal attack.\u00a0 So those of you\u00a0getting up a head of steam\u00a0to hit me with fiery riposts defending Nancy Cook and her work, please hold your fire, re-read my post\u00a0and understand this\u00a0post\u00a0is not about Nancy and her work, it&#8217;s just an interesting entering issue I hadn&#8217;t considered before.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And good luck to fellow QN11 entrants!!!
