{"id":1010,"date":"2010-04-17T09:47:22","date_gmt":"2010-04-17T14:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=1010"},"modified":"2010-04-17T09:47:22","modified_gmt":"2010-04-17T14:47:22","slug":"planning-my-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?p=1010","title":{"rendered":"Planning -My Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Quilters talk a lot about how they plan<\/span><\/em> &#8211; and planning comes in different styles and levels of intensity, if that&#8217;s a phrase I can use here.\u00a0\u00a0Many now\u00a0use computer programs that manipulate photos,\u00a0 draw lines and shapes, insert colour or fabrics,\u00a0\u00a0putting together\u00a0images to produce prints on fabric via\u00a0home printers or printers in the university departments where they study\/work\u00a0 then do more processes (print, paint, machine and hand stitch, applique, cutting\u00a0 holes, whatever)\u00a0on top of that.\u00a0 Others draw up large cartoons, cut each piece out and use these as patterns for areas in the piece they&#8217;re working on &#8211; an ancient,\u00a0low tech, but tried and true way of developing a design. \u00a0 Some keep photos, drawings, writings\u00a0 and quotations all organised together in a visial diary, and\u00a0I&#8217;ve seen some incredible\u00a0albums that are themselves works of art.\u00a0 \u00a0 <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">And plenty of others keep little bits of paper floating around, backs of envelopes, paper serviettes,\u00a0or tiny notebooks that tuck into their purses alongside the little digital camera.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is more me\u00a0&#8211; I always have at least a pencil and a scrap of paper if not an actual note book or camera with me.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Photos I download regularly, but the bits of paper&#8230; well, sometimes they\u00a0turn up months later in a pocket or handbag I haven&#8217;t used in a while.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago after recognising this weak link in the ideas chain,\u00a0my son gave me for christmas or my birthday &#8211; they&#8217;re the same week &#8211; <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">a fabric covered blank paged book about A4 size,<\/span><\/em> urging me to keep my design ideas in it.\u00a0 I have\u00a0fairly consistently done so and now\u00a0 it&#8217;s about 2\/3 used, always in pencil so I can erase if necessary, which I don&#8217;t often do, as I think ideas should stand even if they aren&#8217;t quite &#8216;right&#8217; in their form.\u00a0 Occasionally I\u00a0look back, finding the original ideas that led to particular quilts that sometimes I didn&#8217;t visualise as such at the time; so for example\u00a0for each time\u00a0I have been in Quilt National I can find the germs of those ideas there though the quilt doesn&#8217;t look like the original pencil &#8216;sketch&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0 There are ideas I didn&#8217;t use at the time I noted them, but what I have diagrammed and written is enough to build on later.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes I go back and write a note on a page\/diagram like\u00a0&#8220;this led to Mission\u00a0Beach , april 1995&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I thought I&#8217;d share something of the early design process as I know it,\u00a0with these\u00a0 two unrelated pages being fairly typical:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1011\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/visual-diary-page-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1011\" data-attachment-id=\"1011\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/?attachment_id=1011\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alisonschwabe.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/visual-diary-page-1.jpg?fit=400%2C560&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"400,560\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;3.6&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;FE330,X845,C550&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1271135095&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;6.3&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0125&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"visual diary page 1\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Hmm &amp;#8211; it&amp;#8217;s been a while &amp;#8211; this page goes back over 4 years&amp;#8230;. and perhaps I didn&amp;#8217;t make quite enough notation to help me remember what the heck I was thinking about when I made these jottings!
